This heirloom French pumpkin earned its fairytale reputation through its remarkably smooth, fine-grained flesh, which is unusually dense and sweet for a decorative variety. The fruits themselves are visually striking and substantial enough to command attention on a fall table or in the garden bed. Its dual purpose, serving beautifully as seasonal decoration while delivering genuine culinary quality, sets it apart from pumpkins bred purely for looks or purely for cooking.
Fairytale Pumpkin excels in baking applications where its fine-grained, smooth flesh transforms into rich purees for pies, soups, and custards. The dense, refined texture makes it superior for pumpkin butter and other preserves where you want depth of flavor without stringiness. Its visual appeal means it also serves as a functional decoration, allowing gardeners to grow something that works as both a beautiful autumn display and a genuine cooking ingredient.
Direct seed Fairytale Pumpkin into the garden when soil temperatures have warmed to at least 70°F and all frost danger has passed. Plant seeds directly where you want them to grow, as pumpkins prefer direct seeding over transplanting.
Fairytale Pumpkins are ready to harvest approximately 120-129 days after planting, when the skin has fully hardened and turned a rich, deep color. Harvest when the pumpkin feels solid when pressed and the stem begins to harden and turn brown. Cut the fruit from the vine with a sharp knife, leaving several inches of stem attached for storage and display.

“Fairytale Pumpkin is a non-GMO French heirloom, part of a tradition of European pumpkin cultivation that stretches back centuries. French gardeners selected and preserved this variety for its combination of aesthetic charm and kitchen performance, allowing it to pass from generation to generation. It represents the kind of heirloom that European seed savers valued, where a plant earned its place in the garden not through breeding programs but through consistent performance and beauty appreciated by successive generations of cooks and gardeners.”
