Hardy in zones 6, 11, this non-GMO cultivar tolerates partial shade and moderate water, thriving as a low-maintenance addition to bright windowsills or sheltered outdoor containers. Sprengeri Asparagus Fern is not a true fern at all, but a resilient ornamental asparagus that grows vigorously from seed into a compact, feathery shrub. Its exceptional pest and disease tolerance sets it apart as a hardy houseplant choice, rare among tender ornamentals. The fine, needle-like foliage creates an airy, botanical look that lasts year-round in frost-free zones and transitions beautifully indoors during winter. Remarkably easy to start from seed at 70, 85°F germination temperature, it develops into a full, bushy plant that requires minimal intervention once established.
Sprengeri Asparagus Fern serves as a decorative houseplant and indoor greenery option, prized for its fine, feathery foliage that adds softness and botanical texture to shelves, tables, and hanging containers. Its evergreen growth habit makes it a natural choice as a living alternative to traditional dried seasonal decorations. Outdoors, it functions as a compact ornamental shrub in warmer zones, offering year-round visual interest in mixed containers or as a textural accent in partial shade gardens.
Start seeds indoors 6, 8 weeks before your last spring frost in a warm location maintained at 70, 85°F. Sow seeds on the soil surface or just barely covered, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination typically occurs within 2, 3 weeks at optimal temperatures. Transplant seedlings into individual pots once they develop their first true leaves, and keep them under bright, indirect light indoors.
Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over 7, 10 days before moving them outside. Transplant after the last frost date when soil has warmed and night temperatures remain above 50°F. Space plants 36 inches apart in gardens, with 60 inches between rows if planting in rows. Handle seedlings gently and plant at the same depth they were growing in their containers to avoid root disturbance.
Prune lightly to shape the bushy growth habit and remove any dead or yellowing stems. Sprengeri Asparagus Fern responds well to cutting back to encourage fuller, denser branching, particularly if it becomes leggy indoors. Trim away any damaged foliage to maintain the plant's neat, compact appearance and improve air circulation through the feathery branches.
