Winter Squash
Butterbaby Winter Squash is a compact bush variety that brings the rich, nutritious character of winter squash into a smaller footprint. This cultivar thrives in full sun with moderate watering and prefers slightly acidic soil between 6.0 and 6.8 pH. Like all winter squash, it's a nutritional powerhouse packed with carotenoids for vitamin A production and special polysaccharides called pectins that support antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Butterbaby's bush growth habit makes it ideal for gardeners working with limited space, eliminating the need for extensive trellising or sprawling vines. Winter squash varieties like this one offer exceptional storage potential and nutritional density, making them a staple for those serious about self-sufficiency. The firm rind and long storage capability mean your harvest continues feeding your family months after the growing season ends.
Butterbaby winter squash is prepared like other winter squash varieties, roasted, pureed into soups, or baked until the flesh becomes tender and sweet. The mature fruit stores exceptionally well, making it valuable for extending the harvest through winter months when fresh vegetables become scarce.
Harvest Butterbaby winter squash when the rind is completely firm and resistant to fingernail puncture, a sign of full maturity. Cut the stem with 2 to 4 inches remaining attached to the fruit. Once harvested, gently wash the squash in a sanitizing solution made from 10 parts water to 1 part bleach to remove any field debris and help prevent rot during storage.
