Golden Bantam Improved stands out for its genuine, old-fashioned flavor that modern sweet corn varieties often lack. The variety produces large ears with 12 rows on tall plants, coupled with vigorous, early growth that gets you to harvest quickly. This improved strain captures what made the original Golden Bantam beloved by gardeners while delivering more consistent results.
Golden Bantam Improved is grown for fresh eating, valued for its genuine sweet corn flavor. The large ears with 12 rows provide ample kernels for boiling, roasting, or grilling whole, or for cutting kernels for corn salads, succotash, and traditional corn dishes where authentic flavor matters.
Direct sow Golden Bantam Improved seeds into warm soil once the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures reach 60–70°F. Plant seeds 1 inch deep, spacing them 8–12 inches apart in rows 30 inches apart for tall plants. Corn can be succession-planted every 2–3 weeks for continuous harvest.
Harvest Golden Bantam Improved ears when silks have turned brown and dry, typically 70, 85 days after planting. The kernels should be plump and milky when a fingernail is pressed into the cob; avoid harvesting too early or too late. Ears are ready when they feel full and firm, and the husks remain green and snug. Pick ears in the early morning for the sweetest flavor, and use them immediately after harvest for best taste.
