Tennessee Spinning Gourd is a whimsical heirloom variety that transforms gourds into spinning tops, a living craft project that's been delighting children and gardeners for generations. These petite gourds, reaching just 2 to 5 inches across, mature in 90 to 99 days under full sun and are grown specifically to be dried, painted, and spun like toys. What makes this cultivar truly special is its dual purpose: while the gourds themselves are ornamental and functional as craft materials, the act of growing them becomes an engaging family adventure that reconnects kids to the garden in a meaningful way.

This is not a gourd you grow for the dinner table, it's a time capsule of childhood play. Each plant produces diminutive gourds perfectly sized for small hands, transforming dried specimens into hand-painted spinning toys just as families did generations ago. Beyond the nostalgic appeal, these gourds work beautifully as craft materials and even jewelry projects, making Tennessee Spinning Gourd a variety that teaches horticulture through creative play rather than utilitarian harvesting.
These gourds are harvested for crafting rather than consumption. Once fully dried, they become lightweight spinning tops that children can paint in fantastic colors and set in motion on smooth surfaces. Beyond traditional tops, the gourds work as beads and components for jewelry projects, decorative elements for fall arrangements, or hand-painted ornaments. Gardeners also grow them as conversation starters and educational tools, using the entire season as a lesson in plant biology and folk traditions.
Start seeds indoors 3 to 4 weeks before your last spring frost, sowing them about 1 inch deep in warm soil (70-75°F) to encourage germination. Gourds prefer warm conditions, so maintain consistent warmth and don't rush transplanting outdoors.
Transplant seedlings outdoors once the soil has warmed to at least 60°F and all frost danger has passed. Harden off seedlings over 7 to 10 days, gradually exposing them to wind and outdoor light. Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart in full sun and rich soil.
Direct sow seeds outdoors after the last frost date once soil temperature reaches 60°F or warmer, planting 2 to 3 seeds per spot at 1 inch deep and thinning to the strongest seedling.
Let the gourds mature fully on the vine, they're ready to harvest once the skin has hardened and the color has deepened to a rich tan or pale yellow, typically around 90 to 99 days after planting. Cut them from the vine with a short stem attached, then move them to a warm, airy location to dry completely. This drying phase is crucial: cure them indoors in a well-ventilated space for 4 to 6 weeks until they're rock-hard and the seeds rattle inside when shaken. Only then are they ready for painting and spinning.

“Tennessee Spinning Gourd embodies a nearly lost tradition of gourd-based toys. Families across the American South, particularly in Tennessee, grew this heirloom specifically for one purpose: drying the gourds, painting them in vibrant colors, and watching them spin like tops during childhood play. The variety survived not through agricultural records but through the hands of gardeners who valued the joy it brought to their children. As store-bought toys displaced homemade ones, this variety faded from common cultivation, preserved only by seed savers and families who refused to let the tradition disappear.”
