Cantaloupe
Delicious 51 is a heirloom cantaloupe melon bred for the home gardener who wants both disease resistance and speed to harvest. This open-pollinated variety reaches maturity in 75 days (though some sources report up to 89 days), making it one of the earlier cantaloupes available. The plants spread across the garden as vigorous vines, producing melons with a notably thin skin, a trade-off that means exceptional flavor but requires careful handling. Hardy across zones 2 through 13 and remarkably heat-tolerant, Delicious 51 thrives in full sun and delivers the sweet, succulent fruit melons are prized for, packed with nutrients depending on flesh color.

What sets Delicious 51 apart is its combination of disease resistance and early productivity. This variety resists Fusarium Wilt, Powdery Mildew, and four other significant melon diseases, giving home gardeners a genuine edge against common problems that derail melon crops. The heat tolerance and non-GMO, open-pollinated genetics appeal to gardeners who want to save seed or grow heirloom varieties. Its thin skin is a defining feature, it doesn't ship commercially because of this, but that same thinness means you get a melon bred for flavor rather than durability, ideal for eating fresh from your own garden.
Delicious 51 is grown primarily for fresh eating, where its thin skin and early maturity shine. Slice it open and eat it as-is, chilled on a summer afternoon, or cube it for fruit salads where its sweetness and texture contribute genuine depth. Some gardeners preserve it, though its thin skin makes it less suited to long-term storage than thicker-skinned melon varieties. The thin rind also means it's less practical for shipping or bulk storage, reinforcing its role as a home garden treasure meant to be enjoyed quickly and fully.
Sow Delicious 51 directly into the garden once soil has warmed in spring. These melons are tender annuals and need consistently warm conditions to germinate and grow vigorously.
Delicious 51 melons reach maturity in 75 days from planting, though some sources indicate 89 days as a maximum. Watch the leaf where the fruit attaches to the vine; when that leaf begins to yellow, the melon is mature and ready to harvest. Use a sharp knife to cut the melon from the vine rather than trying to twist it off, unlike cantaloupes, these melons won't slip easily when ripe. Pick melons before they overripen, and remember that melons do not ripen further after harvest, so timing is important. Handle carefully given the thin skin, which bruises easily and makes these melons vulnerable during transport.
As a vining melon, Delicious 51 can sprawl widely across the garden. Pruning is optional but useful if space is limited, you can remove side shoots to encourage the main vine and direct growth where you want it. Allow vines to develop naturally if you have room, as the plant's natural spreading habit maximizes fruit production.
