Black Sea Samsun's appeal lies in its balance of heritage authenticity and practical garden performance. Bred in one of the world's most storied tobacco regions, this variety delivers the aromatic character tobacco aficionados seek while remaining compact enough for smaller plots, raised beds, or even container growing. The leaves mature quickly within a narrow window, and the plant's natural deer resistance means less fussing over protection measures.
Black Sea Samsun tobacco is grown for its leaf, which is harvested and cured for various applications including cigar wrapping, pipe tobacco blending, and aromatic smoking preparations. The plant's richly scented foliage appeals to gardeners interested in heritage tobacco cultivation and small-batch leaf production.

Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last spring frost date. Keep soil consistently moist and maintain temperatures between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal germination. Seedlings will be ready to transplant when they develop their first true leaves.
Transplant seedlings outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed. Harden off plants by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Plant at 24-inch spacing with rows 36 inches apart, ensuring they receive full sun and have good air circulation.
Black Sea Samsun typically reaches harvest readiness 70 to 79 days from transplant. Harvest leaves from the bottom of the plant upward as they mature and develop their full aromatic character. Leaves are ready when they have a slightly waxy appearance and feel pliable; avoid picking them while still wet from dew or rain. Cut or carefully snap off mature leaves, leaving the growing tip and younger foliage to continue the plant's development.
