Gallo Melon

Transplant seedlings outdoors once soil has warmed and all danger of frost has passed, typically when daytime temperatures consistently exceed 70°F. Harden off seedlings over 7-10 days before planting. Space transplants 48 inches apart in rows spaced 72 inches apart, or adjust spacing for container or trellis growing. Bury the root ball at the same depth it was growing in the pot.

Direct sow seeds into warm soil after the last frost date, planting 2-3 seeds per hill or at 48-inch intervals along rows. Thin to the strongest seedling once sprouts have developed true leaves.

Gallo melons mature in 70-79 days from planting. Harvest when the melon yields slightly to gentle thumb pressure and the blossom end feels soft but not mushy. Look for a subtle color shift in the skin and a sweet, musky aroma at the stem end as signs of ripeness. The melon should separate easily from the vine when lifted gently; if it doesn't give with light pressure, leave it another 2-3 days. Cut the fruit from the vine using a knife rather than pulling.

Because Gallo is a vining annual, minimal pruning is needed. If growing vertically on a trellis, remove the lowest leaf nodes to improve air circulation near the soil line and reduce fungal disease. Pinch off any diseased or yellowing leaves promptly. Support developing fruits with small slings or netting as they mature to prevent breakage on the vine.
