Lavender Delphinium
Guardian Lavender Delphinium is an F1 hybrid delphinium bred for exceptional uniformity and garden presence, producing tall spikes of lavender-toned flowers that reach peak bloom in 105, 125 days. Hardy from zones 3, 7, this classic cottage garden flower thrives in partial shade and develops into a substantial bushy plant spaced 12 inches apart. What sets this hybrid apart is its predictability: seed companies prize it for consistent height, color saturation, and flower formation, making it equally valuable for professional florists and home gardeners seeking reliable, repeatable results.

As an F1 hybrid, Guardian Lavender Delphinium delivers the uniformity that separates it from open-pollinated delphinium varieties, you get plants that are reliably similar in height and bloom time, which is rare in this often-unpredictable genus. The lavender coloring is the variety's signature, offering a softer, more sophisticated tone than deep blue delphiniums. Its primary strength lies in the cut flower garden: flowers remain fresh for days once harvested at the right stage, and plants rebloom generously in late summer and early fall if you remove spent stems promptly. Support structures are essential (the catalog recommends horizontal trellis 12, 18 inches above the plants), but once established, these delphiniums perform reliably for years.
Guardian Lavender Delphinium excels as a premium cut flower for fresh arrangements and floral design. The tall, densely packed flower spikes create dramatic height and structure in bouquets, and the lavender tone pairs beautifully with white, pink, and purple companions. Florists value this variety specifically for its consistency, when you order seed, you know what you're getting. Home gardeners grow it primarily for cutting rather than dried arrangements, though the spikes dry reasonably well if harvested just as flowers begin opening.
Sow seeds 10–16 weeks before your last spring frost date. Cover seeds lightly—they benefit from light exposure for germination. Maintain temperatures between 50–55°F (18–21°C) in a greenhouse or cold frame environment. Once seedlings emerge, grow them at the same cool temperature range to prevent excessive stretching. Transplant into larger cell packs or 3–4 inch containers 6–8 weeks after germination when seedlings have developed their second true leaf set.
Harden off seedlings gradually over 7–10 days by exposing them to increasing periods of outdoor conditions and wind. Transplant outside after the last spring frost has passed and soil has warmed slightly. Space plants 12 inches apart. If growing in a greenhouse, transplant plugs directly into raised beds in August through September for fall establishment. Ensure plants are secured to support structures at transplanting time.
Cut stems for arrangements when approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of the flowers on the spike are open, leaving the remainder to unfurl indoors for an extended vase life. Harvest in early morning after dew has dried but before heat of the day. Place cut stems immediately in water to prevent wilting. Re-cut the stem ends at a 45-degree angle and change water every few days. With proper cutting technique and immediate water placement, Guardian Lavender Delphinium stems will last 7, 10 days in a vase.
Remove spent flower spikes immediately after the first flowering period ends to encourage a second bloom flush in late summer and early fall. Cut the entire stem back to just above the basal foliage. Deadheading is essential for this variety's ability to rebloom prolifically. In late fall or early spring, remove any dead or damaged growth from the previous season.
