Musquee De Provence is a French heirloom pumpkin that arrived in North America through Vaughan's Seed Store in 1899, bringing with it the distinct character of Southern France. These deeply ribbed, artistic-looking fruits weigh around 13 pounds and measure 6 by 13 inches, though they can grow considerably larger. The flesh is thick, dry, and rich with complex flavor that sets it apart from typical pumpkins. Growing in zones 3-13, it matures in 120-129 days and produces compact plants that thrive in full sun. One taste or even one look at these beautifully sculpted pumpkins explains why they've remained a favorite for both home gardeners and market growers for over a century.

The moment you see a mature Musquee De Provence, you understand why it has captivated growers since 1899. The deeply ribbed skin displays a color so nuanced it demands an artist's palette to describe accurately, while the deep orange flesh promises a thick, dry texture and remarkably complex flavor. This French heirloom combines stunning visual appeal with genuine culinary excellence, making it equally at home as a market showstopper or on the dinner table.
Musquee De Provence excels as a culinary pumpkin for soups, purees, and other dishes that benefit from its thick, dry flesh and rich, complex flavor. Its substantial size and beautiful presentation make it equally compelling as a decorative fall display piece. Home cooks appreciate it for recipes requiring deep pumpkin flavor without excess moisture, while market growers favor it for its outstanding visual appeal and reliable appeal to discriminating customers.
Sow 2-3 seeds per 2-inch container or plug flat approximately 3 weeks prior to your transplant date. Germinate seeds at 75-95°F (24-35°C). Once seedlings emerge, thin to one plant per container using scissors to minimize root disturbance. Harden off seedlings for 4-7 days before moving them outdoors.
After all danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed, transplant hardened seedlings outdoors according to spacing requirements. Handle seedlings carefully during transplanting, as minimal root disturbance produces the strongest establishment.
Harvest Musquee De Provence pumpkins after 120-129 days when the skin has fully hardened and displays its characteristic deep, complex coloring. The fruit should feel firm to the touch and resist fingernail pressure. Leave a stub of stem attached during harvest to prevent moisture loss. Handle harvested pumpkins carefully to maintain the quality of their beautiful appearance. Avoid allowing mature fruits to remain in the field under intense sun for extended periods after foliage dies back, as this can fade their color and diminish surface quality.
