Millennium Asparagus is an award-winning hybrid developed at the University of Guelph that brings cold-hardy vigor and rust resistance to the home asparagus bed. This mostly male hybrid reaches 48 to 72 inches tall and produces harvestable spears within 365 to 730 days from planting, thriving in zones 3 through 8. Long-lived and exceptionally hardy, it's bred specifically for gardeners in colder climates who want reliable, disease-resistant asparagus year after year.

Developed at Canada's University of Guelph, Millennium represents decades of breeding for cold tolerance and disease resistance in northern growing regions. The hybrid's predominantly male genetics means more energy goes into spear production rather than seed formation, extending the productive lifespan of each plant. Its rust resistance is particularly valuable in humid climates where this fungal disease commonly weakens asparagus beds, making Millennium a genuinely practical choice for serious growers rather than a novelty.
Millennium Asparagus is grown for its tender spring spears, harvested and prepared fresh as a seasonal delicacy. The spears are boiled, steamed, roasted, or grilled, and can be incorporated into pasta dishes, stir-fries, and salads. Gardeners value it as a long-term investment in their vegetable beds since asparagus is a perennial that produces year after year once established.

Pre-order Millennium crowns from True Leaf Market, which ships in March for spring planting to the lower 48 states. Start with dormant crowns rather than seeds to accelerate the journey to your first harvest.
Transplant asparagus crowns outdoors in early spring as soon as soil is workable. Dig trenches 6 to 8 inches deep, place crowns 18 inches apart, and cover with soil. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots.
Begin harvesting spears in the third year after planting, once the crown is fully established. Snap or cut spears when they are 6 to 8 inches tall, before the tips begin to fern out and open. Harvest daily during peak season (typically 6 to 8 weeks in spring) to encourage continued production. A mature Millennium plant will produce for 15 to 20 years or longer, with yields increasing as the crown expands.
Cut asparagus spears at soil level in spring and early summer during the active growing season. In late fall or early winter, cut the above-ground foliage down to ground level to remove disease pressure and prepare the plant for dormancy. Allow the fern-like foliage to grow undisturbed from midsummer onward to replenish the crown's energy reserves for next season's production.

“Millennium Asparagus emerged from breeding work at the University of Guelph in Ontario, where horticulturists focused on developing asparagus hybrids that could withstand Canada's harsh winters while resisting the diseases that plague traditional open-pollinated varieties. The resulting mostly male hybrid captured significant horticultural recognition, becoming a trusted choice for cold-climate gardeners across North America. Its development reflects a deliberate shift toward hybrid vigor and disease resistance, moving away from older varieties that demanded more intensive management and offered less reliable harvests in challenging climates.”
