Giant Wax Gourd is a heat-loving annual vine that produces massive, blocky fruits weighing 30 to 35 pounds, wrapped in a distinctive white waxy coating over green skin. This heirloom cultivar of Benincasa hispida thrives in zones 5 through 11 and reaches full maturity in 100 to 109 days after transplanting. The plants develop extensive root systems that anchor them firmly in well-drained soil, making them surprisingly vigorous growers despite their enormous fruit load. Grown as a warm-season annual, it's a spectacular choice for gardeners with space and hot summers who want to produce genuinely impressive harvests.

The sheer scale of this variety commands attention; fruits regularly tip the scales at 30 to 35 pounds, making each plant a major producer. The distinctive white waxy bloom that forms over the ripening green skin doesn't just look striking but serves a protective purpose, sealing in freshness. Self-fertile plants mean you don't need multiple specimens to set fruit, and their extensive root systems let them handle both heat and drought stress that would slow other cucurbits.
Giant Wax Gourd is harvested as a winter melon for storage and culinary use. The mature fruits store exceptionally well thanks to their natural waxy coating, making them valuable for extending the harvest well into winter months.

Start seeds indoors in warm conditions 3 to 4 weeks before your last spring frost. Transplant seedlings outdoors once soil temperatures consistently reach the warm range the variety demands and all danger of frost has passed.
Transplant hardened-off seedlings outdoors after the last frost date when soil is warm. Space plants 80 inches apart to give vines room to sprawl and fruit to develop without crowding.
Harvest when fruits reach full size (typically 30 to 35 pounds) and the distinctive white waxy coating has fully formed over the green skin. The waxy layer indicates ripeness and serves as a natural preservative. Cut fruits from the vine with a sharp knife or pruners, leaving a short stem attached. Harvest before the first frost in zones where winters are cold.
As a vigorous vining plant, Giant Wax Gourd benefits from light pruning to manage its spread and improve air circulation. Remove any tangled or diseased growth to redirect energy toward fruit development, but avoid over-pruning, which can shade developing gourds or expose them to sunscald.
