Snap Pea
Patio Pride Pea is a compact, early-maturing variety of garden pea bred specifically for small-space gardeners who refuse to sacrifice harvest for square footage. This All-America Selections winner grows just 9 to 16 inches tall without requiring a trellis, producing sweet, tender peas in short pods within 40 to 49 days of planting. Hardy across zones 1 through 9 and thriving in full sun, it's equally at home in containers on a balcony as it is in a raised bed or traditional garden row. The variety's open-pollinated genetics and organic seed stock make it a solid choice for gardeners who want reliability without genetic modification.

What sets Patio Pride apart is its deliberate engineering for constraint. Most pea varieties demand vertical space and trellising labor, but this compact cultivar was specifically developed to perform brilliantly in the tight quarters where many urban and small-scale gardeners actually garden. It earned All-America Selections recognition for doing exactly what it promises: delivering genuine pea flavor and productivity from plants barely taller than a ruler. The lack of a trellising requirement isn't a compromise, it's the whole point. You get the satisfaction of growing and harvesting real peas without the infrastructure headache.
Patio Pride peas are eaten fresh from the pod as a snack, their sweet, tender flesh making them irresistible to both children and experienced gardeners grazing through the garden. They cook quickly in minimal water for a bright side dish, their small size and early maturity making them ideal for weeknight dinners when you want homegrown vegetables without long planning horizons. Container gardeners particularly value them for transforming sunny patios and balconies into productive growing spaces that yield enough peas for a family meal.
Direct sow Patio Pride pea seeds into the garden as soon as soil is workable in spring, or in late summer for a fall crop in warmer zones. Push seeds about half an inch into prepared soil, spacing them roughly 2 inches apart in the row before thinning seedlings to their final spacing.
Begin harvesting when pods are firm, fully filled with tender peas, and still bright green, this typically occurs 40 to 49 days from sowing. Pick pods regularly by gently holding the stem and snapping or cutting the pod free with your other hand, encouraging continued flowering and productivity. Young pods taste sweetest; don't wait for peas to mature fully in the pod, as they'll lose their tender texture and sugar content. Harvest in the morning when plants are turgid and cool for the best flavor and shelf life.
Patio Pride peas require no pruning given their compact, naturally bushy vining habit. Simply allow the plants to grow and branch naturally, removing only dead or diseased foliage as needed during the growing season.

“Patio Pride represents a deliberate breeding effort to democratize pea growing for gardeners without sprawling garden space. The All-America Selections award recognizes varieties that have performed exceptionally well across diverse growing conditions in trial gardens nationwide, signaling that this compact habit wasn't achieved at the expense of vigor or flavor. As an open-pollinated variety, it belongs to a lineage of peas that gardeners can save seed from year to year, maintaining genetic continuity and independence from annual seed purchases.”
