Minnie Royal is a game-changing cherry for warm-climate growers who thought they couldn't grow this beloved stone fruit. Developed by legendary plant breeder Floyd Zaiger, this medium-sized red cherry arrives in zones 5-10 with an unusually low chill requirement, ripening 11-14 days ahead of Bing and blooming first among most cherry varieties. The tree grows 14-22 feet tall and produces firm fruit with genuinely good flavor, making it both practical and delicious for Southern gardens and beyond.

Floyd Zaiger's contribution to cherry breeding shines brightest in Minnie Royal's practicality for warm climates. It breaks dormancy and blooms earliest, then ripens weeks ahead of standard varieties, capturing the early season market and home harvest window before summer heat peaks. The firm texture and solid flavor earned it recognition as a low-chill breakthrough, yet it remains highly productive and willing to serve as a pollinator for other cherries like Royal Lee and Royal Crimson. For growers in zones 5-10 who've watched neighbors grow apples while they waited for a cherry that would actually perform, Minnie Royal finally makes that dream real.
As an edible cherry with firm flesh and good flavor, Minnie Royal works fresh off the tree, a quality that matters when you're harvesting early in the season before peak summer heat. Its firm texture means it holds up well in transit and storage compared to softer varieties, making it practical for fresh eating, farmers market sales, or the home kitchen. Its low chill requirement also positions it as a crucial pollinizer within mixed-cherry orchards, particularly for Royal Lee and Royal Crimson, adding value beyond its own fruit.

Plant bare-root or container-grown Minnie Royal in early spring (while still dormant) in zones 5-10. Choose a location with full sun and well-draining soil. Space the tree to allow for its mature height of 14-22 feet, accounting for its eventual canopy spread. Water well at planting and throughout the first growing season to establish roots before the tree flowers.
Minnie Royal ripens 11-14 days ahead of Bing, making it one of the earliest cherries to harvest. Pick fruit when fully red and firm to the touch; unlike some softer cherries, the firm flesh means you can harvest slightly earlier without compromising flavor. The tree's early bloom means harvest typically occurs in late spring to early summer, depending on your zone. Handle the fruit gently to preserve the stem when possible, as this extends storage life.
Prune Minnie Royal during dormancy (late winter) to maintain an open framework that allows light and air circulation into the canopy. Remove any crossing branches, dead wood, or branches that grow inward. Since this variety is highly productive, light pruning is usually sufficient; avoid heavy cuts that might reduce the abundant fruit set this tree is known for. Maintain the natural vase or spreading shape rather than forcing a specific form.

“Minnie Royal emerged from Floyd Zaiger's breeding program, where the renowned geneticist turned his attention specifically toward creating cherries adapted to southern growing conditions. Zaiger's work focused on reducing chilling hour requirements, a barrier that had kept cherry cultivation out of reach for many warm-region gardeners. The result was a tree that not only survives in warmer zones but thrives, blooming first and ripening early, bringing professional-quality cherry breeding into home gardens across a much wider geographic range than traditional varieties allowed.”
