Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your last spring frost date. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in warm soil, maintaining temperatures around 70-75°F for germination. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and provide bright light once seedlings emerge.

Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date when soil has warmed to at least 60°F and plants have developed their first true leaves. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days. Space transplants 24 inches apart with 36 inches between rows.

Harvest tomatoes when they reach full color and yield slightly to gentle pressure. Rutgers VF typically produces its main crop over a concentrated period due to its determinate growth habit, so you may find multiple fruits ready at once. Pick tomatoes at the mature-green to breaker stage (when first blush of color appears) if you want them to ripen off the vine, or wait for full color development on the plant for maximum flavor.

As a determinate variety, Rutgers VF requires minimal pruning compared to indeterminate types. You can remove lower leaves once the plant is established to improve air circulation and reduce disease pressure, but avoid excessive pruning that removes flowering branches. The plant's compact habit naturally limits the need for heavy shaping.
