What sets Lemon Boy apart is its striking golden color, a rarity among slicing tomatoes, paired with a flavor that balances bright tanginess with underlying sweetness. This F1 hybrid was built to perform, boasting resistance to a formidable list of diseases including Fusarium Wilt, Verticillium Wilt, Gray Leaf Spot, and Tobacco Mosaic Virus. The combination of reliable disease resistance, quick maturity, and that distinctive lemony taste makes it a standout choice for gardeners seeking both productivity and something visually different on the plate.
Lemon Boy excels as a fresh slicing tomato, where its bright color and tangy-sweet character make it a showstopper in salads, on sandwiches, or simply enjoyed with a pinch of salt. The medium size and globe shape are ideal for slicing into even pieces, and the flavor works beautifully in dishes where you want tomato presence without overwhelming acidity.
Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your last spring frost. Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix kept at 70-75°F, maintaining consistent moisture but not waterlogged conditions. Provide bright light once seedlings emerge, and keep them under grow lights or in a sunny south-facing window.
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date when soil temperature reaches 60°F or higher and nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days. Space plants 24 inches apart in rows 36 inches apart, planting deep if desired to encourage a stronger root system.
Pick Lemon Boy tomatoes when they've turned a deep golden yellow throughout, this is the key indicator of ripeness, as the color shift signals peak flavor development. Gently twist and lift the fruit from the vine, or use pruners if needed. Fruits are ready roughly 70-79 days after transplanting, and regular harvesting encourages continued production throughout the season.
As an indeterminate variety, Lemon Boy will benefit from selective pruning to manage its sprawling growth and improve air circulation. Remove the lowest 6-12 inches of foliage as the plant grows to prevent soil-borne disease splash, and consider removing some interior branches once the plant is well-established to allow light penetration and reduce humidity-related issues.
