This rudbeckia blooms for an extended season spanning six months, from June through November, which means your garden stays vibrant long after many perennials have faded. The scented flowers attract butterflies while shrugging off deer browsing, drought stress, and poor soil conditions. Plant it close together at just 2 inches apart, and you'll create a dense display of cut-worthy blooms that refuses to quit.
Sweet Coneflower Rudbeckia earns its place in rain gardens and naturalized plantings where its drought tolerance and clay soil acceptance make it thrive. The showy flowers are excellent for cutting and bringing indoors, where their fragrance becomes an unexpected bonus. In the garden, it serves as a nectar source and visual anchor, particularly valuable in late-season borders when bloom options thin out.

Stratify seeds for 30 to 60 days before sowing indoors. Mix seeds with damp clean sand or vermiculite, place in a plastic bag, and refrigerate at 35 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Check often for germination and maintain a lightly moist medium. Transplant seedlings as they germinate rather than waiting for all seeds to sprout. After the chilling period, sow the stratified seeds into a seed-starting mix and expect germination within 10 to 30 days.
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date in your zone. Harden off plants by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before planting. Space transplants 2 inches apart in full sun.
Direct sow in fall through early spring into prepared soil. Surface sow and lightly press seeds in; light is beneficial for germination. Water gently to keep soil lightly moist until seedlings emerge.
