Charleston Grey delivers the genuine article: a full-sized picnic watermelon with real heft and character, not a dwarf novelty. Its light greenish-grey coloring and distinctive cylindrical shape make it instantly recognizable in any garden. Bred specifically for durability and disease resistance over 70 years ago, it remains a benchmark for what a proper watermelon should be. The open-pollinated genetics mean you can save seeds year to year, connecting you to generations of gardeners who've done the same.
Charleston Grey is the quintessential picnic watermelon, bred and refined for slicing, chilling, and serving at outdoor summer gatherings. Its substantial size and full seed count make it ideal for feeding a crowd, and its sturdy rind handles transport and storage without bruising. The open-pollinated genetics also attract seed savers and gardeners interested in preserving heirloom varieties and maintaining genetic diversity in their gardens.
Direct sow Charleston Grey seeds outdoors once soil temperatures reach 70, 85°F and frost danger has completely passed. Plant seeds in mounded hills or raised rows spaced 120 inches apart, with individual plants positioned 36 inches within the row.
Charleston Grey reaches maturity in 80, 89 days from sowing. Harvest when the melon has reached full size (typically 22 inches long and 10 inches across, weighing 28, 35 pounds) and the light greenish-grey rind has deepened slightly in color. The underside should show a creamy yellow or pale spot where it rested on the ground. Cut the melon from the vine with a sharp knife rather than twisting it off, leaving a short stem attached.

“Charleston Grey emerged from intentional breeding work at the Southeastern Vegetable Breeding Laboratory in Charleston, South Carolina, introduced to gardeners in 1954. The variety was developed during a pivotal moment in American agriculture when breeders sought melons that could withstand shipping, storage, and the demands of commercial picnic culture. The light greenish-grey rind became its calling card, distinguishing it from darker varieties of the era. As a open-pollinated heirloom, Charleston Grey represents a moment when seed companies and agricultural scientists worked to create varieties that home gardeners could reliably grow, harvest, and replant year after year.”
