Regal Watermelon is an F1 hybrid designed with practicality and productivity in mind. This large-seeded variety matures in 80 to 89 days and produces dark green, striped melons with brilliant dark red flesh that's both firm and crisp. Bred for hand-planting in resource-limited regions, it thrives in zones 3 through 13 and grows as a sprawling vine that reaches 12 to 18 inches tall. The variety combines heat tolerance with reliable yields, making it accessible to gardeners who want straightforward, delicious melons without complexity.

The standout feature here is the large seed size, which makes hand-planting intuitive and reduces the fiddling that typically comes with tiny melon seeds. Coupled with heat tolerance and a relatively compact vine (for a watermelon), Regal performs well in varied climates and doesn't demand constant fussing. The dark red flesh and crisp texture promise genuine eating quality, not just visual appeal, and the dark striped rind is visually striking in the garden.
Regal Watermelon is a picnic-type variety bred for fresh eating straight from the garden. The firm, crisp dark red flesh and size make it ideal for slicing and serving chilled on warm days, or halving and scooping straight from the rind. It's the kind of melon that excels as a centerpiece at the table rather than as a processing crop.

Transplant seedlings outdoors once soil temperature reaches 70 degrees Fahrenheit or higher and all frost danger has passed. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before planting. Space transplants 36 inches apart in rows spaced 120 inches apart.
Direct sow seeds outdoors once soil temperature reaches 70 degrees Fahrenheit and all frost has passed. Plant seeds at the recommended depth and thin seedlings to 36 inches apart.
Regal Watermelons mature in 80 to 89 days from planting. Harvest when the melon feels heavy for its size, the rind shows deep green and striped coloring with no green spots (a yellow or creamy spot on the bottom indicates ripeness), and the tendril nearest the fruit stem has dried and browned. Cut the melon from the vine with a sharp knife rather than twisting it off, leaving a short stem attached.

“Regal F1 Hybrid Watermelon was specifically selected for cultivation in third-world agricultural contexts where hand-planting and seed handling needed to be straightforward and reliable. The large seed size was intentionally bred as a practical advantage, addressing real-world growing challenges in regions where modern equipment might be unavailable. This deliberate engineering reflects the hybrid's purpose: accessibility without sacrifice of flavor or yield.”
