Legacy Watermelon is a classic picnic melon, bred for serving fresh at the table and shipping without damage. The 25-35 pound fruits are sized for family gatherings and community events, though they're large enough to feed a crowd. The excellent shelf life makes it practical for farmers markets and storage, extending the season beyond harvest week. You slice these chilled and serve them simply, letting the high sugar content speak for itself.

Direct sow Legacy seeds into warm soil after the last frost date when soil temperature reaches 70-85°F. Choose a spot with full sun and room for sprawling vines.
Harvest Legacy melons 80-89 days after planting when they've reached full size of 25-35 pounds. Look for a creamy yellow spot on the underside where the fruit rested on the ground, and listen for a hollow sound when you tap the melon with your knuckles. The skin should have a deep, rich color with distinct striping. Cut the stem cleanly with a knife rather than twisting; these melons handle shipping better when the stem stays intact.

“Legacy emerged as a standout performer in commercial and home garden trials around 2013, gaining recognition for its combination of productivity, disease resistance, and genuine sweetness. As an open-pollinated heirloom type, it represents the kind of melon that can be saved and replanted by home gardeners indefinitely, preserving genetic diversity and adapting to local growing conditions over generations. Its development prioritized the traits that matter most to real growers: strong performance in the field, reliable disease resistance, and fruit quality that justifies the space it demands.”
