Jewel stands out among Southern Highbush blueberries for its strikingly large fruits, a feature that makes it especially rewarding for fresh eating and preserving. Its partially evergreen nature gives it dual appeal: beautiful seasonal flowers and foliage throughout the year in mild winter regions. The plant reaches its full productive potential in just 5 to 6 seasons, making it faster to fruit than many northern highbush varieties, and it produces generously once established.
Jewel Blueberries excel fresh off the bush, where their size and generous production make them perfect for snacking and enjoying at peak ripeness. They freeze and can beautifully, preserving their flavor for winter baking, jams, and preserves. Beyond the kitchen, the plant functions as an ornamental landscape shrub, earning its place in gardens as much for its spring flowers, colorful summer fruit, and autumn foliage as for what you harvest from it.

Begin harvesting in late June and continue through late August as berries ripen progressively over several weeks. Pick only fully blue berries that feel slightly springy when gently squeezed; under-ripe berries will not develop further sweetness once picked. Harvest regularly to encourage continued production throughout the season. Refrigerate berries shortly after harvest, and delay washing until just before eating to preserve their delicate bloom and extend storage life.
