Jester Ornamental Millet is a compact hybrid grain that brings theatrical color to gardens and landscapes without demanding much from the gardener. Growing just 2 to 4 feet tall, this variety matures quickly in 60 to 69 days and produces the same rich burgundy tones as its larger cousin Purple Majesty, but in a more manageable, refined package. Hardy in zones 7 through 11 and thriving in full sun with minimal fussing, it's one of the easiest ornamentals to establish directly in the garden bed, even in dry, sandy soils where other plants struggle.

Jester grows smaller and neater than other burgundy millets while maintaining that signature deep color that catches light beautifully. Its real strength lies in how little it asks: direct sow it where you want it, let it handle poor soils other plants reject, and enjoy a finished ornamental in just over two months. The compact upright habit makes it work in tight spaces, containers, and commercial landscapes where taller varieties would overwhelm the design.
Jester Ornamental Millet is grown for ornamental landscaping and home garden display, where its rich burgundy plumes add structure and seasonal interest to flower beds and mixed borders. The compact 2 to 4 foot height makes it valuable for both residential and commercial landscape design, where it fills the mid-layer role without requiring staking or support.

Direct sow Jester Ornamental Millet after your last frost date when soil has warmed to at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Sow seeds directly into garden beds or landscape areas, as this variety thrives when started in place. One of the major advantages of Jester is how readily it accepts direct sowing even into less-than-ideal soils; its preference for dry, sandy conditions makes it ideal for beds you're trying to improve or locations where moisture accumulates poorly.
