African Blue Basil
African Blue Basil is a striking perennial herb that transforms a garden into something theatrical. Unlike annual basils, this cultivar takes a full year to reach maturity, rewarding patient gardeners with dark green to purple foliage crowned by dramatic dark purple spiked flowers that bloom in shades of pink and purple. Growing 24 to 36 inches tall and wide, it commands attention as both a culinary and ornamental specimen, with fragrant foliage and edible flowers that pollinators adore. Also known as Magic Mountain Basil, it brings an unexpected elegance to landscapes while offering fresh herbs for the kitchen.

Dark green to purple foliage adorned with striking dark purple spiked flowers creates a plant that's as beautiful as it is functional. The large edible flowers attract pollinators while adding visual drama to gardens, and the fragrant foliage delivers both culinary and ornamental appeal. This quick-growing perennial takes a full year to establish but becomes a long-term garden asset once established.
African Blue Basil serves both culinary and ornamental purposes. The fragrant foliage can be harvested for cooking, while the large edible flowers make striking garnishes for plates and drinks. Its appeal to pollinators makes it valuable in gardens designed to support beneficial insects.
Since African Blue Basil takes a full year to reach maturity, expect harvesting to begin after the first growing season has passed. Once established, pinch or cut foliage regularly to encourage bushier growth and continuous production. The edible flowers can be harvested as they appear, making them available for culinary use throughout the flowering season.
