Melanoplus spp., Schistocerca spp.
Large jumping insects that can cause severe defoliation, especially during drought years. Populations can reach outbreak levels in dry conditions.
Large insects 1-2 inches with powerful hind legs for jumping. Brown, green, or yellow coloring. Nymphs look like small adults without fully developed wings.
Ragged holes in leaves. Defoliation starting from leaf edges. Damaged flowers and fruit. Chewed stems. Complete plant destruction in outbreaks.
One generation per year. Eggs overwinter in soil, hatch in spring. Nymphs develop through 5-6 stages over 40-60 days. Adults feed until frost.
Maintain diverse plantings. Reduce weedy areas where eggs are laid. Till garden in fall. Encourage natural predators (birds, spiders, ground beetles).
