Forficula auricularia
Nocturnal insects with distinctive pincers that feed on soft plant tissue. Can be beneficial (eating aphids) or damaging depending on population levels.
Dark brown, elongated insects 1/2 to 1 inch with prominent pincers (cerci) at rear. Nocturnal - hide in dark, moist places during day.
Irregular holes in leaves and flowers. Damaged seedlings. Chewed fruit touching ground. Damage often blamed on slugs or caterpillars.
One generation per year. Females overwinter with eggs in soil chambers, guard eggs and young. Nymphs develop through 4 stages over summer.
Reduce hiding places (mulch, debris, boards). Water in morning so soil dries by evening. Trap and remove. Encourage natural predators (birds, toads).
