Epilachna varivestis
Looks like a beneficial ladybug but is actually a destructive pest of beans. Both adults and larvae skeletonize leaves.
Adults are copper-colored with 16 black spots, 1/4 inch long. Larvae are yellow with branched spines. Eggs are yellow, laid in clusters on leaf undersides.
Skeletonized leaves (only veins remain). Damaged pods. Reduced yield. Plants may be completely defoliated in severe cases.
1-3 generations per year. Adults overwinter in leaf litter, emerge in late spring. Eggs hatch in 5-14 days, larvae feed 2-5 weeks.
Plant early-maturing varieties. Clean up garden debris in fall. Rotate bean planting locations. Interplant with potatoes or marigolds.
